Sudoku Widows, Who Are They?

Well, there's no denying it. Sudoku IS addictive and can make your brain fry.
So to speak. :)

Marli Murphy, a columnist from The Kansas City Star reports:

At our house Mr. Sudoku cannot be interrupted when he’s puzzling, because he times and records how long it takes him to complete each one. Some puzzles can be solved in as little as 10 or 20 minutes, but others can take a couple of hours.

The first time I “forget” and interrupt his concentration, he pauses, looks up briefly and smiles. The second time, I can’t tell if he’s smiling because he doesn’t look up, but I can pretty much guarantee he’s not. The third time, well, I don’t interrupt a third time, unless it’s to tell him his hair is on fire.
Unlike other addictions, like heroin or tobacco or designer footwear, sudoku is difficult to discourage, because it is actually good for your brain. Keeps the ol’ gray matter sharp. If my guy were hitting the bars every night or looking at Internet porn, I’d have reason to be outraged, but what am I supposed to say against sudoku — “Hey, honey, stop improving your mind already!”? The worst part is that for the first time in 10 years, he’s suddenly beating me at Scrabble.

Let's have a moment of silence for the poor Sudoku widows and widowers out there.

Well, what do you know?

Sudoku actually helps cope with difficult mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

A spokeswoman at Dept. of Psychiatry at University of Cambridge says:

"cognitive reserve" - intelligence - made people more resilient.
"Fortunately, cognitive reserve can be strengthened through education, neurocognitive activation - doing crossword or Sudoku puzzles etc - or other treatment programmes," she added.
